wash your windows.
oh, the irony--a photo with the tell-tale sign of pollen lingering on a dusty screen. but i assure you, it gets worse and the difference between this shot and what was there before it is vast. here's the issue: windows are one of those things that tend to get neglected, especially in rental apartments. they languish in the borderlands between landlord and tenant responsibility and more often than not they go unloved and unwashed. but a good bath with some vinegar and water and your world becomes bright once again. honestly, it makes a huge difference.
i know there are readers out there who are unable to open, let alone wash, their windows. for those guys, all i can recommend is to petition the landlord. for those of you who can wrangle the things open: proceed with caution. we're lucky enough to have windows that fold in (try it, you might be too!) which means access to the outside from safe within. if that's not the case chez vous i'm not advocating that you go rogue and strap yourself to the outside of your building just to get a little extra dazzle. but if you can manage to wash the things, i promise you'll be delighted by what you find. namely, sunlight.
