Last week, a little package wended its way to my mailbox*, which included Rebecca Proctor's Recycled Home. The sturdy kraft paper volume reminds me of a grown-up version of the kid's craft books I pored over as a child, except instead of including instructions for making wrinkly-faced apple people, I got instructions for making my own window box. Proctor's book includes lovely images and written instructions for fifty different DIY projects that repurpose and reuse existing materials. I was especially taken by the book's patchwork project. At my mom and dad's house there is a patchwork tweed blanket that my great-grandfather made in his own New York apartment sometime at the beginning of the last century. I like to think that one day I might endeavor to take on the same task. The book is certainly worth a look, though I imagine if you're not an experienced crafter, some of the supplies and instructions might need some additional explanation.
