when we moved to brooklyn last june, we walked into our apartment and were literally stunned at the size. it's not that we hadn't seen the place before, but it's the kind of tiny that i swear looks tinier empty than filled. it was impossible to imagine how we could squeeze all of our worldly possessions into the place.
turns out, we couldn't. so we compromised. i'm lucky enough to have parents that live not so far away, so a few boxes, mostly of books, went to their attic. we parted with heftier pieces of furniture and the small army of wicker baskets i'd accumulated over the years before we left providence.
the trickiest thing in this spot though, is the artwork. the walls and angles are strange and we have much more height than width, which makes hanging framed works difficult. hung too high, they're impossible to see, hung too low, they make the small space feel smaller. {did i mention i'm a claustrophobe?}.
mostly we chose to display a few things we love, and slid the others under our bed. to help keep things interesting, i started a little gallery wall. i change it from season to season, covering the dingy "kitchen" wall with an ever-rotating collage of post cards and photographs, wreaths, and garlands anchored by shanna murray's wall decal. right now? i'm digging the motorcycle mama.
