two days. two lovebirds. one tiny island off the coast of rhode island. one tiny iphone video to remember it by. yes, i'd go back there in a heartbeat. yes, we chose springsteen for our first dance.

my week in objects, mostly.

five little things that made my week (this week, and last).

1. this fence post.
{because it marks the entrance to our dear neighbor's farm where everything that was magical happened last week}.

2. this saw and that ladder.

{for helping us to build a little ceremonial something}.

3. this field of zinnias.

{for offering more august beauty than we could have dreamed up}.

4. this ring.

{for being james's}.

5. this mirror.

{and the moped it belonged to, for travelling with us all over block island on our minimoon}.

these past two weeks have been chock full of objects, most of them i've been too busy to capture on camera. too many hugs to give and laughs to share to take time for documenting.

make-believe: honeymoon.

we're headed back to the city today, but we were lucky enough to escape to a place that seemed a lot like make-believe: two nights on a new england island and just the little bit of beach time we were craving. cruising around on a moped wasn't too bad, either.

organize your closet.

now, this post is a little bit tricky. wooden hangers are, admittedly, not the most space-saving of closet storage options. there's no denying that they're wide and bulky, regardless of their dashing good looks.

these huggable hangers would probably do the trick much better. and even more revolutionary, these guys come with a hook that allows hangers to hang one from the next. neat-o. i'm a little jealous of these super slim options, but i'm also not one to ditch something that's perfectly good just because something better came along.

i get a lot of queries about our apartment's closets. there are two: one tucked under the stairs harry potter-style, and another in our building's hallway, with a padlock. that's glamour right there, ladies and gents. we mostly keep winter coats and fancy dresses and things in the hallway closet, though i'll admit i crunched my wedding dress in the under-the-stairs-closet for the weeks leading up to the wedding. you never know what kind of wedding dress thieves might have been ready to pick that lock!

in both spaces, we try to keep things neat and organized. even, and perhaps, especially, when you have limited closet space, it's important that you fight the temptation to just cram things in willy nilly. it's not always easy. i admit to having had more than a few outbursts of frustration while wrestling clothes back in the closet. but, if we remember to put things back more or less in the same spot, it's easier to manage. and of course, we've divided the space down the middle. just don't think for a minute that james doesn't try to sneak his haberdashery onto my side.

it's been a week full of objects, but, of course, it hasn't been the objects that matter so much as the people. feeling terribly grateful for all of the people in this world who love me, especially james. taking a few days to bask in the glory. regularly scheduled programming, soon enough.

this week has been all about getting ready for the big day (which is tomorrow, by the by). there have been projects galore and this bride-to-be is in the thick of it. no doubt i'll be sporting a chipped manicure for the big day. just as it should be.

make the bed.

i get a lot of questions about how two of us survive life in our luxurious loft. since we're busy getting married this week, i thought a tip about our bedroom would be fitting. i don't want to get too hot and heavy on you, but it's only fitting to discuss the (pre)marital bed on such a week.

after yahoo shine's decorating guide recently published a story on our tiny apartment, the emails (and the ridiculous number of comments)  that we (and the article) received told us two things: 1) america is very concerned about our sex life 2) jokes about flatulence are still all the rage. seriously, read them and weep.*

let it suffice to say that a somewhat lower-than-usual ceiling does not impair our sex life. point final.

now that that's out of the way, let me also suggest that no matter the size of your sleeping quarters, making the bed is an essential part of (pre)marital bliss.

sorry, this isn't a sexy post after all. but bear with.

for me, making a bed is not so much about how it makes the apartment look throughout the day (though that's nice too), but it has everything to do with climbing into a made bed at night. unfolding the top sheet and shimmying into bed is like unwrapping a present, and loving what you find so much you want to climb right in. for me, it's the most delicious and peaceful moment of the day and it marks a clear transition from needing to be awake and thinking to getting to be asleep and dreamy. i like clear transitions.

plus, there are bonus points for those of the cohabiting persuasion: being the one to make the bed can earn you all kinds of do-sweet-little-somethings-for-each-other points. almost as many as climbing out of bed first to make tea. almost.
