midsummer magic.

It's a good time of year, this one we're in right now. It's not the midsummer of the summer equinox, but the midsummer that means it's the beginning of August and fully half the summer is still before us. The best half, if you ask me. The one with peaches and tomatoes and late afternoon thunderstorms. Let's agree to not wish it away.

I had drinks with two new friends last night. I learned what Mezcal tastes like. I vowed never to drink it again. There were string lights and love stories. Life is good off the internet.

When I was home a few weeks ago, I styled this tabletop for Gardenista. Queen Anne's lace and still green apples and all the pretty things I could round up from my mom and dad's house. I'd love if you took a look at the full story.

I'd love it more if you created a little midsummer tabletop of your own and raised a toast to the idea that summer's not over. Not nearly. Prost!, etc.

peaches, et cetera.

peaches in a white bowl
This morning's been a study in learning how to take photographs in a very dark apartment and waking up early for peaches.

I wanted to get to the farmers' market in our neighborhood while things were still bountiful so I slipped on an already worn sundress and tied my hair in a knot and called myself presentable enough for these city streets. I've been writing about farmers' markets in other places all week, and I figured it was time for me to pay a visit to my own. No kitchen counter's too small for peaches and sour cherries and the first of the season's tomatoes.

The winter months in this apartment make me forget how dark the summer months are. It's dark enough to need the lights switched on for the entire morning in this apartment, and again starting at 6:00 pm. This is mostly a good thing because it forces us outside, which is where we should be in the summertime. It also forces me to play with the knobs on my camera more than usual. Someday it'd be nice to know what all of these numbers and symbols mean, but for now I'm content to fuss until I get something that looks right enough for me.

Besides, on a morning like this one, peach juice is all the sunshine I need.

just daydreaming about a few things for my favorite kinds of summertime bbqs. we're galavanting about in mid-coast maine right now, probably doing lots of things much less stylishly, but nonetheless,  here's to a summer filled with roasted marshmallows and lawn chairs.

people's pops.

pop
people's pops. they're not mind blowing. they're juice, frozen. and that's the beauty of them. don't expect to blown away, expect to be utterly satisfied.  slurp on your very own raspberry basil pop knowing that you're enjoying a treat chock-full of fruit that's been locally grown and responsibly sourced. this weekend at smorgasburg, i sampled one. pure delight.

people's pops have a book coming out in june which will be filled with recipes for making the pops in your own place. you can pre-order it here. in the meantime, if you're local, find them hawking their wares at markets and parks around the city. an afternoon trip along the high line, pop-in-hand, sounds mighty nice to me.

what about you? what's your favorite popsicle flavor?

other things:
i like this mold for making classic pops at home.

playing hooky.

james and i hopped in the car this morning and headed out to long beach for a morning dip. ok, so the water's not quite warm enough for a dip that doesn't involve a wetsuit, but i did catch up on yesterday's paper and gain a few new freckles. i can already taste summer.
